Victoria TX Independent Film Festival Offers An Interactive Experience…
We here at the OMBG site are gearing up for our coverage of the Victoria Independent Film Festival. One of the things we are very excited about is that so many of the film makers and subjects of the films are actually traveling with the movies so they can represent them. This will give festival goers a chance to interact with the creators of the films, ask questions about them and really get a whole other concept of the movie and the art of film altogether.
Here are some Q&A events that show goers can look forward to:
This Way Of Life Shot over four years, This Way of Life is an intimate portrait of Peter Karena and his family. Masterful in the saddle and Hollywood handsome, Peter lives by an internal code of values and honor largely lost in modern times. Though European, Peter was adopted into a Maori family and is Maori in all but skin. He is a horse-whisperer, philosopher, hunter, and builder, a husband and father. Despite seemingly overwhelming challenges, Peter refuses to compromise. Their attempts to navigate the discord between Peter and his father culminate in the theft of his valuable herd of horses and the burning of their beloved family home. Now homeless, we watch as Peter steers his family toward a new way of living and being. Regardless of their hardships, the Karenas manage to never lose sight of the magic in the everyday. There will be a Q&A with Peter Karena and his son Llewelyn from New Zealand following the film. It’s a grat opportunity to meet these wonderful subjects from the film. This event is March 22 at 7pm in the Welder Center for the performing arts.
Southern Gothic Short Film Program There are 5 short films in the Southern Gothic Short Film Program, which is hosted by Christine Elise McCarthy (who has been acting professionally for over 23 years, has a slew of notable roles and indie projects under her thumb). The films shown in this block are: Foot Soldier directed by Jon Bryant Crawford, The Orderly directed by Daniel Cambell, Ballerina directed by Brian Stafford, The Strange Ones directed by Christopher Radcliff and Lauren Wolkstein, and Pillow directed by Joshua H. Miller and Miles B. Miller. There will be a Q&A with Joshua H. Miller director of Pillow following the screening. This event starts March 22 at 9:30 in the Welder Center for the Performing Arts.
Angela Wright (short film) and Perfect Match First there will be a screening of Angela Wright a short film by Genevieve Farrell. Following that will be a Q&A with Cast members Genevieve Farrell and Garret Camilleri Then, the world premiere of Perfect Match directed by Chad Eddy will screen followed by a Q & A with Executive Producer Mark Booker, Actors Giselle Brasseur, Nic Roewert and Director of Photography Daniel Stephens Perfect Match centers on Two love lorn twenty-somethings who find each other on a popular Internet dating site. Does it matter that Stephen works for the site that brought the two of them together? Or that he knowingly manipulates the site to create a perfect match? As you can guess, it gets complicated. PerfectMatch is a quirky 21st century romantic comedy that realizes that as our technology evolves, the ease with which we find our soulmate does not. This event starts March 23 at 7pm in the Welder Center for the performing arts.
NYC double feature: Dirty Old Town and Captured in Dirty Old Town, the Bowery becomes a nexus of shattered dreams when a merchant has 72 hours to pay his rent. Facing extinction, his ramshackle tent of antiquities lures a troop of misfits, freaks and renegades who form a tableaux vivant full of carnival pageantry, white lies and victimless crime in a fleeting glimpse of Downtown New York. Following the screening will be a Q&A with Q & A follow with filmmakers Dan Levin, Jenner Furst, Julia Willoughby and Clayton Patterson. In Captured, Clayton Patterson has dedicated his life to documenting the final era of raw creativity and lawlessness in New York City’s Lower East Side, a neighborhood famed for art, music and revolutionary minds. Traversing the outside edge he’s recorded a dark and colorful society, from drag to hardcore, heroin, homelessness, political chaos and ultimately gentrification. His odyssey from voyeur to provocateur reveals that it can take losing everything you love to find your own significance. The NYC Double Feature kicks off at 9pm March 23 at the Welder Center for performing arts. Make Believe Make Believe follows six teens who all share an extraordinary passion: the art of magic. Armed with great skill and a dazzling array of illusions, they embark from around the world to attend the World Magic Seminar in Las Vegas. There, they hope to be crowned Teen World Champion by Master Magician Lance Burton. Onstage, the film’s subject are remarkably assured and dedicated. Offstage, however, these young outsiders confront the diverse obstacles of adolescence, turning Make Believe into an inspiring coming of age story. With great humor, honesty, and heart, Make Believe reveals an enduring world audiences know little about while exploring a time of life no one ever forgets. Following the screening there will be a Q&A with 2 of the young magicians, Krystyn Lambert and Derek McKee. These incredible teens will perform some magic and be on hand to answer questions. After their performance at the Welder Center, Krystyn and Derek will head over the the Children’s Discovery Museum for a meet and great reception with the kids, and perform an 30 minute encore magic act together. Kevin In Austin, TX in the early ’90s, Kevin Gant was the Duplass Brothers’ hero. They reveled in Kevin’s exploratory musical style and playful spirituality. But in 1995, Kevin mysteriously disappeared. Jay Duplass’ documentary debut explores who Kevin is, how he lost his inspiration, and what he must do to get it back. Following the Screening Kevin Gant will be in attendance for Q&A and Live musical performance The Event is at 4 pm March 24 at the Welder Center for performing arts.
Hard Times: Lost on Long Island The Great Recession “officially” ended in the summer of 2010, but for 25 million unemployed and underemployed Americans the fallout continues. For too many, their middle-class life has been foreclosed and their dreams have turned into nightmares. Sadly, their stories have too often been ignored. In a strange way they have been “disappeared,” evicted from our collective conscience – a permanent new underclass of long-term unemployed. Located on Long Island, the birthplace of the post-war suburban American Dream, this documentary follows the story of the long-term unemployed and the shrinking of the middle class by chronicling the lives of four families. Starting in the Summer of 2010, which was supposed to be the summer of recovery, and continuing through the holiday season six months later, we witness the growing difficulties and despair as these people search in vain for employment while their plight and pain are too often invisible to the political and media mainstream. This film hopes to remind us of their humanity and restore respect and dignity to their struggle. Q & A follows with Director, Marc Levin and Director of Photography, Daniel Levin. The event will be at 5pm at the Welder Center for the performing arts March 24.
Double Feature: The Dynamiter and 5 Shells In the Dynamiter, It’s another summer in Glen Allan, Mississippi for fourteen-year-old Robbie Hendrick. His wayward Mother has run off again fearing a breakdown and he’s left to pass the days caring for his half- brother, Fess. But he’s as hopeful as ever that his dream of a family will be realized this year. As Robbie and Fess burn the days together, Robbie’s dream becomes closer than ever before. His older brother Lucas returns to the home and postcards begin to arrive from their Mother promising that she’s better and that she’ll return home soon. But Robbie knows the futility of keeping faith in promises. As the deep days and nights begin to pass without his mother’s return and with the ever-present threat of social services closing in on the brothers, Robbie must face the fact that he may just lose the only family he’s ever had: Fess. Filmed on location in the Mississippi Delta town of Glen Allan, MS with all non-actors from the region, The Dynamiter is a story of family in the forgotten America, uncompromisingly told by the very people who live it everyday. This week our featured artist is kick ass indie band The Sidekicks. They have a new record out called “Awkward Breeds” and a 7″ called “Grace” which have both come out recently on Red Scare.
