Opening Night at Victoria TX Film festival (Day 1 blog)
Last night Brea and I went to the opening night of the Victoria TX Film festival.
There was some chaos in the beginning as we were not sure where we were going to set up our booth for interviews that night. While we were still sorting things out, Brea sent me to watch the first movie “This Way Of Life” while she sorted out the booth situation.
After I watched “This Way Of Life” I came back to the Filmmakers Lounge to check on the booth setup, and sure enough there was Brea with the table set up (and as a surprise to me) had our podcast’s music running through speakers and was DJing for the people outside.
Inside the Filmmakers Lounge, was a mix match of mingling area along with art exhibit by the festival’s Artistic director Don Avlo. I love Avlo’s stuff. It’s got all the elements of things I grew up with. Punk, Mexican Culture, real touches of who the man is and what has shaped his life. So I was glad to see that he hung around the building pretty much all night and stopped to talk to us often.
Later that night we were able to get an interview with Dan Levin (director from Dirty Old Town) and Clayton Patterson (subject of Captured and iconic documentarian, folk historian, and video activist) This interview was probably the best treat of the whole night. Both Dan and Clayton were really nice guys, but also very complimentary of each other. Clayton Patterson gave really great stories and discussions on the Lower East Side, historical happenings he witnessed, and also why art is so important and artistic community is important. Then when we were wrapping up we exchanged information and instructed us to reach out to him to continue to share and spread ideas. THIS had a huge effect on me. I cannot stress enough, in all the things we do and talk about and how much we continue to walk the line in the things we talk about (keeping our podcast DIY and grassroots, questioning the norm, etc) here is a man who not just gave us a great interview, but wants to continue to talk, share, and make the world a better place.
Both movies are in tonight’s NYC Double Feature. I am sure to be there.
After the interview, Brea left the fest to head home for her day job the next day. I stuck around and played some more tunes outside. I was thinking about putting up shop when I heard someone ask “are you podcasting?” “No,” I said, “interviews” “Do you want to interview Slacker Magazine?” I thought to myself… these guys could be fun…. “Sure”
Andy and Courtney for Slacker Magazine came in and sat for an interview. This was a fun interview with 2 really cool people. Both Slackerites were not shy about talking to the microphone and gave fun answers. What I really like is that Andy started as a concert promoter so we talked about the transition from music to press. Slacker is the only free high gloss magazine that covers Austin’s nightlife.
Both interviews will be posted soon.
Today, there are cool free matinees all day at Johnson Symposium and the feature films start tonight at 7.
